The fashions of Linda Iki and Chikuzen are on stage for the 53rd Cherry Blossom Festival Fashion Show luncheon Feb. 13 at the Sheraton Waikiki.
Linda Iki, one of Hawaii’s most prominent mainstream designers, is best known for her knits. What began as a “cottage industry” business out of her home 25 years ago has grown into a name recognized in Honolulu fashion circles for classic, timeless designs in knits and other fabric media.
Chikuzen features antique kimono fabric redesigned and recreated into contemporary Western style clothing for both women and men. The company is headed by Jan Tsujimura and Sonya Miyashiro. Tsujimura, who began formal sewing lessons in the sixth grade at Kimata Sewing School on Vineyard Boulevard, is the designer, while Miyashiro is responsible for finding intriguing prints and unique kimono designs through various suppliers.
This year’s show, titled Kaleidoscope Couture, is produced by Ryan Brown of ADR Productions. “The show will be a clean presentation of quality designs by two prominent Hawaii designers with Asian ancestry,” says Brown. “Their culture is reflected in their prints but showcased in contemporary couture styles.”
