Australian designer Marylea Conrad launches her new clothing line — Melia Conrad — at a special runway fashion show at the O Lounge Thursday, March 22 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

“My designs are made for the fashion forward,” says Conrad, “for the type of woman who wants to be unique and individual, but still be comfortable.”

She describes her designs as feminine, sophisticated and chic.

Conrad, who also works as the associate editor of Ward Centers Magazine and is the mother of a 3-month-old daughter, Melia, believes she has always had a passion for fashion. “From the age of 6, I would cut fabric to dress up clothespins,” she recalls. “And at age 8, I was sketching dresses on Post-It notes.”

At 18 she won a national award for costume design in Australia, and then studied fashion and textile design at the University of Technology, Sydney.

Now Conrad lives in Makakilo with her husband, whom she met while on vacation in Hawaii, and is officially adding fashion designer to her resume.

“I focus on design versatility, designs and cuts that are so practical for every body,” says Conrad. “And prints that are desirable and feminine.”

Melia Conrad can be found at Split Obsession in Hawaii Kai, The Butik and Rafael. Tickets to the Melia Conrad fashion show cost $20 per person ($22 at the door), and include Australian wines, pupu, door prizes and a special hula performance by Miss Hawaii Pilialoha Gaison. The show will be emceed by KHON2-News morning anchor Tannya Joaquin.

A portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit the Women’s Fund of Hawaii, a grantmaking foundation dedicated exclusively to supporting Hawaii’s women and girls.
