Vintage inspired, girly and colorful. That’s the style of local designer Michele Lau, whose original creations are a true reflection of her personal style.

“Ninety percent of my wardrobe is my own designs,” admits Lau, 25. “I take a lot of vintage inspirations and the modern day inspirations and I try to mix it together and create something new that people haven’t seen before.”

Lau, who was born and raised in Salt Lake, first learned to sew in third grade. But it wasn’t until high school that she discovered her passion for making clothes. “I wanted original clothes that no one else had,” she explains.

Her popular designs are inspired by “furniture design, old movies, street kids and old ladies, as well as music by groups like The Wu-Tang Clan, Sonic Youth, the Pixies, Prince and Laytrx.”

Lau, a 1998 graduate of Moanalua, says she hopes to open her own boutique in Hawaii someday. Currently, her fashions are available at MisFortune in Ward Centre, www.cutxpaste.com, www.michelelau.com or by appointment at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)
Lau has two lines: the Michele Lau label which is the more “serious” collection and the Rip Mutha line which is more casual and fun.
