Miss Hawaii Lauren Cheape

Miss Hawaii Lauren Cheape will spend the new year in Las Vegas in preparation for the Miss America pageant happening Jan. 14 at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino.
But before she packed her bags, Cheape gave MidWeek a peek at part of the wardrobe she’ll bring with her to the national competition.
“In my job as Miss Hawaii, I love to wear classic styles,” she says. “I love simple, tailored A-line dresses with intricate necklines.
But in my free time, you can find me in a swimsuit and dress.”
Cheape, a graduate of Mililani High School, lists her favorite designers as Elie Tahari, and local designers IOLANI and Andy South.
“Andy is making my gown for Miss America, and it is a work of art,” she reveals. “He is hand-sewing everything on the dress, truly amazing.”
Cheape, 24, attended the University of Hawaii, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in film directing from the Academy for Creative Media with minors in business and Japanese. She previously worked as a mentor at UH, and also on her family’s egg farm, Petersons’ Upland Farm, founded by her greatgrandfather in 1910.
The preliminary competition for Miss America takes place Jan. 10 to 12. The public also can vote for a finalist at missamerica.org, and the pageant will be broadcast live on ABC.
“I am very proud to be representing my home, our beautiful state of Hawaii,” adds Cheape. “And I really do want world peace.”
