NIKETOWN Honolulu presents the sixth annual Niketown 5K for Kids run on Sunday, Oct. 2 at 7 a.m. in Waikiki.
The race has become a highly anticipated event for schools across the island as 100 percent of the entry fee is donated to an Oahu school P.E., play and athletic program of each entrant’s choice.
About $75,000 was raised from last year’s race, with 5,000 participants signed up. Applications are no longer being accepted for this year’s race since the 6,000 entry limit has already been met.
“The success of the Niketown 5K really validates our efforts to keep kids healthy by providing equipment and resources that keep them active,” says Keala Peters, regional marketing manager for Nike Inc. “And we look forward to expanding the Niketown 5K to other cities.”
Since its inception in Honolulu in 2000, nearly $300,000 has been raised for Oahu schools. The event has been so successful that Nike is expanding its efforts with inaugural runs in Las Vegas, Denver, Atlanta and Miami this year.
Niketown offers a variety of athletic apparel and footwear for most sports at all levels. Its products are made “to enhance an athlete’s performance” with technical features such as Dri-Fit for moisture management.
Nike also recently launched its Pro Apparel line, a performance base layer that is light weight and cool to the touch. It also features tubular seamless body construction, knit-in mesh panels for breathability, and flat stitching in the seams for less chaffing.
There’s also the Nike Free, a running/training shoe that strengthens your foot by mimicking barefoot running.
