In an effort to elevate and challenge “what has become the norm for casual menswear in Honolulu,” friends Jay Otaguro, Eric Takemoto and Jason Kawakami have opened Noteworthy, an upscale, street-contemporary boutique with a primary concentration on men’s cut-and-sew apparel located at the corner of Keeaumoku and Makaloa streets.
“We all believe that clothing makes the man,” they explain. “The idea to open up a store spawned from a discussion about the voids in Honolulu’s men’s fashion. We thought to ourselves, why not create a place that we would want to shop and fill it with clothing that we would wear?”
Some of the brands available are Alife, Black Apple, Comune, GPPR, Naked & Famous Denim, Norse Projects, Public Label by The Hundreds, Public School, Super sunglasses and 3Sixteen.
The store also shares the block with other notable men’s fashion stores Kicks/HI, Leilow and Crooks and Castles. “As far as our location, we could not have asked for a better spot,” they say. “Collectively, we plan to make Keeaumoku/Makaloa Honolulu’s premier fashion district.”
In addition to their Noteworthy duties, Takemoto, a 1998 graduate of Kaiser High School with a master’s in counseling psychology from Chaminade University, also works as a college-prep counselor at Kaiser. Kawakami, a 1998 graduate of Kalani High School, is CEO of Tantriq Entertainment. And Otaguro, a 1997 graduate of Konawaena High with a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Oregon, previously worked as a general manager for Abercrombie and Fitch.
