When Roberta Oaks moved to Hawaii a year and a half ago, she was disappointed with the local fashion scene and started making her own clothes. Now she’s making clothes for not just herself, but for a growing group of loyal customers.

“An opportunity arose to show some things at the The Arts at Marks Garage,” recalls Oaks, who is originally from Missouri. “So, I hung a rack and that was it! People bought my stuff and they loved it. Shortly after, I started Oaks Hawaii and began selling at local art markets.”

Oaks, who pursued a degree in fine arts at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and at Kingston University-London, does her own dyeing, and sews with only used materials. Her line consists of dresses, skirts, tops and some accessories.

“Right now all things vintage are so in, so my stuff is really popular,” adds Oaks. “Also, with it always being warm here, I don’t have to worry about a fall/winter line, which is great because I don’t want to make wooly clothes.”

Oaks Hawaii can be found at Kapiolani Park during the monthly Handcrafters and Artisans Alliance (HAA) Art Fest. The next event is Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, call 428-1214, e-mail .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address), or visit www.oakshawaii.com
