Ali McMahon is living a dream come true. When she was 7, she already knew she wanted to own a clothing store. Twenty-five years later, she opened Olive Boutique in Kailua, which she describes as stylish, effortless and inspired.

The store offers “beach chic essentials” by designers Ella Moss, Bobi, Indah, Free People, We the Free, Aude, Saint Grace and more. It also carries Kai fragrance products and one-of-a-kind creations by jo.jah.jae and Devin Krista Jewelry.

Raised in Kailua, McMahon moved to California at 19 and then to Seattle to pursue her dream in fashion. She earned a degree in fashion marketing from the Art Institute of Seattle, worked in retail as a visual merchandiser for Banana Republic, and then free-lanced for various luxury retailers, including St. John, Escada, Gucci and Chanel. At the time, she thought about opening a store in Seattle, but her heart was in buying comfortable summer clothing fit for a beach lifestyle, and her goal was to move back home to Kailua and open a boutique.

“I wanted to buy and sell clothing I was passionate about and something I knew about,” she says. “My goal is to buy clothing that has a delicate balance of being hip and comfortable without being over-the-top trendy; clothing that will stay in your closet for years and not go out of style.”

The store’s name comes from McMahon’s obsession with olives and also from her favorite color green. Olive Boutique is located at 43 Kihapai St. For more information, visit iheartolive.com or call 263-9919.
