Erica Apana and Bruce Chin

Erica Apana loves to shop. Her boyfriend Bruce Chin is a retail expert. So it was only natural for the couple (pictured below with their pup Bear) to open a store featuring some of their favorite things — clothing for men, women and children, as well as accessories and art.

Split Obsession is located in Hawaii Kai and features brands such as 2K by Gingham, KenzieGirl, Fresh Karma, Hype, Super Lucky Cat, Poetree, Level 99 denim, and more.

“We are unique for several reasons,” says Apana, a 1995 graduate of Kamehameha Schools who also works as a speech therapist. “First of all, we have combined clothing, art and accessories into one space, creating a visually interesting shopping experience for both men and women. Second, we carry a variety of artists who work in all types of mediums, including screened T-shirts, toys, paintings and prints. This helps to make art functional and affordable for young people. And third, we feature many artists and brands that are exclusive to our store or have limited availability in Honolulu.”

Brands of toys include Medicon, Kid Robot, Span of Sunset, Kaws and Adfunture.

Neither Apana nor Chin are from the Hawaii Kai area (Apana lives in Moiliili and Chin in Mililani), but they felt the location was perfect.

“We started coming out to the movie theaters in Hawaii Kai and we saw that there aren’t too many retail stores out here,” says Chin, who is originally from the San Francisco Bay Area and previously worked for Adasa and Town & Country Surf. “And we wanted more of a community-based store. It’s more a concept store than a boutique.”

Split Obsession is located in the Koko Marina Shopping Center near Zippy’s. Store hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sundays from 10-ish to 6 p.m. For more information, call 395-3380.
