“Cash for cool clothes, money for your music” — that’s the slogan of Stylus Honolulu, a music and fashion exchange outlet where you can buy, sell and trade clothing, CDs and records.
“Stylus Honolulu was founded in the belief that everyone has unwanted items in their closet that another person would love to own,” explains owner Shawn Lopes, a former entertainment writer and columnist for the Honolulu Star-Bulletin and former production director for Radio Free Hawaii and 105.9 The Big Kahuna.
“Ninety percent of our items are priced under $10. Our products are both new and recycled. And we’ve always made it a priority to offer Honolulu fashionable, quality clothing at thrift shop prices. But unlike thrift shops, Stylus carefully scrutinizes and handpicks each and every piece for quality and style. Aspiring homegrown designers are also encouraged to bring their original wares for consignment.”
Stylus Honolulu, which is located on the third floor of University Square (at the corner of King Street and University Avenue), opened in July 2005. Lopes, who has also worked at Jelly’s and Cheapo Music, says he opened the store because it was time for a change in his life. “Music was always my greatest passion, and I knew my experience in the various branches of the music industry would be of great assistance to me in opening a CD and record shop,” he says.
“In fact, much of the way we do business is based on the new-and-used, buy-and-sell Jelly’s model. Though we carry new and used CDs and records like Jelly’s, clothing constitutes half our operation. And unlike shops that deal strictly in consignment, we’re much more casual, youthoriented and not at all concerned with designer labels.”
Stylus Honolulu pays customers on the spot (or up to 50 percent more in in-store credit) for each piece they select.
