The Tinman Triathlon takes place this weekend with 800 athletes gathering in Waikiki for a grueling race of strength and endurance.

The event consists of a 750-meter swim at Queen’s Beach in Waikiki; a 25-mile bike ride from Waikiki through Diamond Head and Kahala to Hawaii Kai, and back to the finish at Kapiolani Park; and a 6.2-mile (10K) run from Kapiolani Park, around Diamond Head, through Kahala, and to the finish at Kapiolani Park.

“There were 300 participants - men and women - in the first Tinman in 1980, 700 in the second, and thereafter a ceiling of 1,200 participants was set,” says Olga Caldwell, race director. “The primary objective of Tinman Unlimited is to create, plan and organize a race that will challenge and inspire all participants and offer them safety, fun and pride. It is not meant to be an elite race but a triathlon for every interested athlete.”

Training for a triathlon can be very time consuming as it is a multi-sport event. It can also require a lot of gear - apparel, bike shoes, running shoes, helmet, bicycle, and various accessories (watch, sunglasses, hat, socks, etc.).

“For triathlon wear, there’s a trend for more people to wear the two piece tri-suits rather than just the one-piece or Speedo types,” says Faye Saiki, owner of The Bike Shop. “It’s more comfortable to wear for everyday training and athletic use. There’s also more choices in color and design now.”

Featured here are some of the latest gear available for triathlons and other similar sports.

Cheer on this year’s Tinman participants. The race starts at 5:45 a.m. Sunday, July 17, at Queen’s Beach. Average finishing time is two hours and 20 minutes.

“There will be some traffic delays, and we appreciate the public’s understanding and patience,” adds Caldwell. “We also ask that drivers be aware of the bikers and runners on the course.”
