Meet local designer Vicky Durand at a special trunk show at Under a Hula Moon in Ward Centre this weekend (Nov. 16-18) featuring her Hawaiian Wearable Art line of colorful sarongs, scarves, caftans, skirts, cropped pants, tote bags, visors and home accessories.

Customers also will get a chance to see Durand’s new line of silk home accessories, including multi-colored table runners, pillows and shower curtains.

“My print designs are inspired by the lush Hawaiian flora (laua’e ferns, palm leaves, monstera leaves), colorful marine life and striking ancient petroglyphs,” says Durand, who was born in California and moved to Hawaii in 1954. “My designs are produced using handcrafted processes that make each piece a one-of-a-kind. Everything is individually dyed and printed in my studio (in Makaha) tapping the island’s natural resources: tropical leaves, ocean water and the warm Hawaiian sun. As a result, unique and interesting variations in color and pattern take shape to become a natural part of the product. Silk-screen printing and hand-painting are used to blend yet another unique layer to many designs.”

Initially, Durand worked primarily with cotton, but her fascination with color led to the “discovery of the vivid effects that could be achieved using silk.”

Vicky Durand Hawaiian Wearable Art can be found at fine island galleries and clothing stores throughout Hawaii and the Mainland. On Oahu, it’s available at Under a Hula Moon in Ward Centre and in Kailua, Malibu Shirts in Waikiki, The Honolulu Academy of Art gift store, Queen Emma Summer Palace gift store and Na Mea. Designs and products can also be seen at Durand’s Makaha Beach Boutique by appointment (call 696-9660) and online at www.HawaiianWearableArt.com
