Howzit, surfers and beach goers!

We’re off and running ... I mean “surfing” with the Vans Triple Crown’s first jewels, the OP and Roxy Pro at Haleiwa! The Roxy Pro finished in stellar style - the girls had 6-footers to ride, and let me tell you about their performance: The best I’ve ever seen.

The winner was Australian Chelsea Georgeson, who blew minds with her radical yet buttery-smooth style. She sliced and diced those speeding waves with her back to the waves! She drove her board straight up the faces and bashed the falling lips before free-falling to the base of every wave - only to do it again and again. Chelsea just would-n’t fall - even if she buried the nose of her board under the water on top of the throwing crest! Remember now, she’s 10 feet up and looking straight down - with a surfboard that’s supposed to be on top of the !@#$ water, not underneath it! Somehow she’d pull the nose out as she free fell, gain total control and veer right into another perfect bottom turn ... amazing.

Now you know guys and girls are always comparing each other, especially in sports, and surfing is no exception. So here’s my comparison: There were moments at the 2005 Roxy Pro when the top women having their top moments were as good as the male pro counterparts in this size surf! I was in a bit of a state of shock. The women displayed more power than I’ve seen before! Plus, their maneuvers were radical, yet controlled in the most critical sections of the wave. WOW - somehow that Beach Boys tune Surfer Girl has new meaning for me. Keep it going girlz ... you are awesome! I’ll take a surf lesson anytime.

OK, Chelsea G. just went to the top of the watery heap with her win, but now they move over to Sunset Beach Nov. 26 -Dec. 6. It is here that Peru’s Sofia Mulanovich will try to regain her No. 1 spot that Chelsea just snatched away. Finally, our female maestros will walk on water at Maui’s Honolua Bay Dec. 8-20 for their final contest. The current ratings are looking best for No. 1 Chelsea Georgeson, No. 2 Sofia Mulanovich, No. 3 Megan Abubo, No. 4 Melanie Redman-Carr/Layne Beachley, No. 5 Rochelle Ballard, No. 6 Keala Kennelly. Now, I’m biased and I admit it, but - to quote the Christmas song - do you see what I see? That’s three Hawaii girls up there in the top seven!

Sorry, boys, I didn’t mean to give the wahine all the attention (yes, I did). But let’s see what’s left for you. By the time this gets to your eyeballs, we’ll know who’s the new OP Pro champ and No. 1 in the Triple Crown chase. In fact, you’ll be riding the jacking waves of Sunset Beach for the O’Neill World Cup of Surfing! This second jewel of the Vans Triple Crown goes from Nov. 25 to Dec. 6. This is the last World Qualifying event (WQS) and is worth $125,000, thanks to O’Neill Wetsuits. What’s this mean? The toughest, most grueling series is coming to an end for 2005. This WQS is for the starving, dues-paying surfing talents who have to ride anything and everything just to have a shot at the Dream Tour or World Championship Tour (WCT). These are the ranks all must work up through to surf against the giants of surfing today. Here are some locals to keep an eye out for: Pancho Sullivan, Marcus Hickman, Nathan Carroll. I’m sure that many of the top 44 are not looking forward to surfing against these guys. Plainly put, they know Sunset - they charge!

And, I’ll definitely be there to keep you safely in the “surf info” lineup! The Triple Crown Hotlines are 596surf, 596wave, and 638rush. Plus, Triplecrownofsurfing.com or Surfnewsnetwork.com!

Happy Thanksgiving! I’m GQ, dropping in 4 U!
