Charging Buffalo

Wussup, wave riders and beachgoers?!
Waves are like time … they keep rolling on. As we head into April/spring we get a mixed blessing … The Big Country swells begin their descent and will soon disappear, while our southern shores begin to show signs of life! We are reminded of playful surfing and beautiful summer days … Although there’s no hard numbers to prove this, my bet is more people surf during the summer than the winter. More people have time off, there’s smaller “fun-size” surf that most riders can handle, and there’s simply far more surfers in town than country.
Team Waimanalo/Hinano was one of the early
entries at the Buffalo Big Board Surfing Classic
I’d like to congratulate newlyweds “Dave the Wave Slave” and Karen, who married in beautiful Kaneohe on Sunday! Dave’s been on the Surf News Network Team for more than half a decade … you can hear his “one-of-a-kind” delivery on 596-SURF and plenty radio stations … Dave’s a man of style and loyalty … ( and he scored — Karen’s gorgeous) … Good luck on your marriage, music and “wave-slaving” …
Two incredible events occurred the first two weekends of March: First, the “Wild West” witnessed the Buffalo charging full force! What a sight to behold … The Buffalo Big Board Surfing Classic! There’s simply no surfing event like it on Planet Earth. The Makaha crew brings together more forms of wave riding than most can even imagine … all in one entertaining package. Check this out: The “Canoe Surfing” winners were Team Quik, the “Tandem Surfing” final saw the perennial Brian Keaulana and Kathy Terada “hold” top honors and ankles and wrists … The top “Body Surfing” Team were Duane and Ronald DeSoto … The winners of the Team “Body Board” Division were Jimmy Keaulana and Tiare Lawrence … Jimmy K. also won the Paipo event (those Keaulanas can ride) … the biggest Bully Boarder (with a 250-pound minimum initiation fee) was Melvin Keawe! Our No. 1 Legend finalist was Ants Guerrero … And if you’ve never seen the “Stand-Up Beach Boy” you’re missing out.

The surfer never lies down! The board is big enough so the athlete stands nearly erect and uses a canoe paddle to catch and ride waves. It’s not easy. Brian Keaulana told me that one hour of Stand-Up Beach Boyin’ is equal to half a day of regular surfing! Talk about “core” training! Guess you could ask the winner — World Longboard Champ, Bonga Perkins … Hey, let’s plug our No. 1 Foreigner Division and guest competitor, Masa Tsukamoto … You see, the Aloha Spirit invites all to participate! That’s what it’s all about … Sure, the Buffalo had all the standard contest formats, but it’s the big array of simply riding waves for fun and fellowship that make the Buffalo Big Board Surfing Classic so special … there’s no place like Makaha … there’s nobody like Buffalo Keaulana … and there’s no sport like surfing!
Get wet and see you back here next week for more surf talk … I’m GQ, droppin’ in for you!
