South Swells

Aloha,Wave Riders!

Now, this is how we do it … we kick off June with a “real” south swell … just like the one we rode last week from Thursday eve (June 9) to Sunday eve (June 12)! That was a 4- to 6-foot beauty and will raise the bar for Town the rest of summer. Although the consistency was a bit off and the tradewinds a bit brisk … the right moments came in glory for all to behold. Tons of tubes came through, especially to the two spots with the word “bowl” at the end. There were many rescues and many more dings. Egos and bodies were bruised, but spirits soared on a thousand waves. Yes, King Kamehameha embraced the entire South and Leeward shores with the Gift of Waves … from Makaha all the way through the Ewa Plains … past Town and Diamond Head through Hawaii Kai and Sandys and even around the corner to Makapu‘u! Stoked! Plus, as of this writing, Monday (June 13) we should have two more South swells near advisory levels … one by Thursday and another by Sunday, Father’s Day. For all surfing dads, this is your chance to get out there without having to come up with any excuses. So be excused and go surfing! Remember, longrange forecasts are tricky. Call 596-WAVE or go to SURFNEWSNETWORK.COM to get details and closer encounters … The China Longboard Classic had classic waves for a classic contest all weekend long … The girls had large waves for a large crowd for what is now the largest girls’ competition in Hawai. It’s now in its ninth year benefiting sexually abused women and children of Hawaii. There were 16 divisions from “short to long to body” boards, and ages ranging from 5 to 50 … Awe, what the heck, all ages! China showcases upcoming talent the likes of state champ Alana Blanchard, but also gives support to Kapiolani Medical Center’s program for abused women and children. The “vibe” is fun, relaxed and a wonderful chance for all to embrace the true Aloha Spirit. Thank you to all and to Rip Curl for making this event possible. We’ll be praying for the same surf next year for the 10th annual China Long Board Classic!

The Fosters ASP (Association of Surfing Professionals) World Championship is heading to France for event No. 5 beginning its holding period June 23. They can surf wherever the best waves are breaking (it’s mobile) on Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean. Kelly Slater will try to make it three in a row … again! By winning the past two contests, he’s in position to match a feat which has only been done by four other surfers in the ASP’s 30-year history: Tom Carroll in 1984, Martin Potter in 1989, Tom Curren in 1990, and Kelly in 1996. A win at this year’s Rip Curl Search at Reunion would give him the honor of being the only man ever to win three consecutive events — twice! Notice one more fact — each of the above-mentioned surfers won the World Title the very same year they won three in a row! Oh my God! That’s the good exciting news … the bad news is the ASP World Longboard Championship had to be cancelled due to Nokia having to withdraw its sponsorship. This makes me realize how fortunate our touring “short board” pros are these days. These are their Golden Years. As far as longboarding goes, the ASP pledges its commitment to longboarding and will work to get the best back in the water in 2006 … Keep hanging 10!
