Aloha, surfers and beachgoers! It’s definitely better this week than last, especially on the South side. It really is feeling more like summer, but just wait till the Local Motion Surf Into Summer officially kicks it off this Memorial Day weekend. It’s huge. More than 250 stoked wave riders will descend upon Magic Island and paddle across the channel into the left-hand peeler of Ala Moana Bowls! I can hear the Ka’au Krater Boys singing it in my head right now, “Everybody Go SURF! UU ... AH ... UU”! Well, just about everybody will be.
The forecast is looking good with a third south swell arriving Saturday afternoon through Monday. Trades will finally be back in more typical fashion, and there should be enough sunshine to go around. I gotta throw in the fact that the North Shore is getting a few out-of-season west and northwest swells as well. One is coming Saturday from a typhoon named Yutu. All these waves will be small relative to North Shore standards, but hey, considering it’s near June I don’t think anyone will complain about head-high surf.
So the summer of 2007 will begin with Hawaii’s biggest surf contest at Ala Moana Bowls, plus plenty of other great events to highlight our ocean life.
On Memorial Day the Waikiki Beach Boys will paddle out for the sixth year in a row as a way to remember our loved ones: Yes, Waikiki is our playground and our life. “I’ll Remember You” is a wonderful way to share and show respect for the memory of our loved ones, ohana, kupuna and friends who have passed.
Duke Kahanamoku once said, “My ohana believes we came from the ocean, and that’s where we’re going back.”

You can paddle out with anything you’d like. Come early for parking. Pule, or prayer, is at 10:45 a.m. at the Duke Kahanamoku statue, and the paddle out begins from Queens Surf break at 11 a.m. For more click WWW.HAWAIIANBEACHBOYS.COM
Another cool event is on the hot beach of Ewa this Sunday, 8-10:30 a.m. It’s the Hui O’He’e Nalu joining forces with Kaiser Permanente to participate in a beach cleanup at Hau Bush Beach Park. The HSBA also will be lending a hand to protect and preserve our ‘aina. It will be nice to clean up the southwest side of our island! Thanks to all who are joining in, and a personal mahalo to multi-talented (and multi-tasked) Mahina Chilling-worth; she gives so much of her busy life to so many of these good causes. Last week our best long-boarders and stand-up paddlers went at it again for the second event of the Steinlager Shaka Longboard Series - this time at a spot called “Flies” off Kakaako Waterfront Park near Honolulu Harbor. They got waves in the nick of time, as the season’s first south swell blessed the contest. All made the most of the 3-foot waves using high-performance moves, but it was Duane DeSoto, now living in Honolulu, who came in first. Rounding out the four-man final was Ned Snow, second; Kapono Nahina from Wahiawa in third, and Geoff Wong from Honolulu, fourth.
In the C4 Waterman stand-up paddle division, it was familiar faces from the Sunset Beach event: Leleo Kinimaka took top honors, followed by Brian Keaulana, Dave Parmenter and Nolan Keaulana respectively.
