The Rest Of The Restaurant

The thing that I love most about writing this column is not the fact that I get to eat out, or that I find out about the most interesting new restaurants as soon as they open. Neither is it the fact that I can complain in a pretty decent forum when something really gets my back up. Nope, it’s the letters and e-mails that I get from you that make my job most interesting.

They are at times a little sassy, they are definitely opinionated, and they are mostly agreeable, often highly complemintary and always interesting. I really enjoy them and try to respond to every one — the good and the bad.

Last week I received an e-mail from a reader who follows our restaurant reviews closely, and for the most part seems really happy with what she reads — except for one thing.

“ You never mention the bathrooms,” writes our reader, who asks to remain anonymous “as I don’t want anybody spitting in my food.”

And she goes on to say, “We have vowed never to return to restaurants after seeing waiters failing to wash their hands, servers with bad colds, or restrooms that do not look clean.”

And later she adds, “Food writers don’t think this is important.”
