Aka: von Baron is my artist name which I use to promote my New Age music.
Music occupation: Producer, composer, arranger, music engineer and performer.
How did you get into the music business?
I took violin in fourth grade and saxophone in fifth. I hated both of those instruments so much that I used the instrument cases as sleds in the wintertime (with the instruments inside!). From about age 15, I started playing drums and things just kind of fell into place. I had great teachers in all areas of music and started playing at churches and private engagements, and eventually clubs. I tried to run from music as a career on a couple of occasions, even going all the way to Europe, but it kept finding me and bringing me back. I finally submitted to my passion and have been really happy ever since.
What is your biggest musical accomplishment?
My biggest musical accomplishment so far has been the creation of my first solo album, Pangaea. I’ve been in music for 20 years now and have had all this music playing in my head. I really needed to let it out. It started as a simple project with a couple of song ideas and blossomed into a complete album two-and-a-half years later. I’m very excited to share my music with the world, and I already have some songs written for the next album.I think once I opened the flood gates, it all just started flowing out and it doesn’t seem to be stopping anytime soon! You released Pangaea online recently. How has the response been? You know, the response has been great. I hired Ariel Publicity, a PR firm in New York, to conduct an Internet PR campaign, and I’m now getting played on dozens of Internet radio stations,have some nice reviews and can be found easily on any search engine. I’ve even sold some CDs!
What are your plans for distribution here in Hawaii?
I am currently working to get Pangaea into the major retail outlets across the state. Until this all falls in place, music lovers can find Pangaea at Amazon.com, iTunes, Digstation.com and CDBaby.com
Can you describe the feel and sound of the album?
The sound is really a synthesis of New Age, Smooth Jazz and World music elements into a cohesive sound. There’s a fair amount of percussion as well to give it an earthy,grounded feel. I arranged it in a way, though, where all of the instruments support each other to create a smooth, unified sound. It’s funny because the music is really exhilarating and relaxing at the same time. I didn’t think this was possible, but listeners tell me that it gives them energy and calms their minds.All in all,it’s music that takes you away from your hectic day.
Why did you decide to do a solo album?
It started off as more of an experimental process in writing music that would help me relax and unwind from the rigors of life. As I got more involved, I realized that I really wanted to go for it and make the album. Ever since I was a child, I have listened to New Age music and was always inspired by Yanni, Enya and Andreas Vollenwieder. I also grew up in the era of breakdancing and actually used to pop and lock at school dances. That combined sense of rhythm and melody seems to be a part of me and really came through on this album.
What are your plans musically?
I’m just going to keep writing,playing and promoting.I believe in building a strong fan base and community around this music. The purpose of the music is really about promoting world unity and peace. The big picture goal for von Baron is to perform my music live with a full orchestra and a 13-piece band. I guess you could say that’s my musical dream. Of course, I’ll also continue to perform with the Honolulu Jazz Quartet.
