How did you get your start in music?
I started off on Maui performing at coffee shops just jamming, then restaurant gigs. Then it turned into me playing with a percussionist, then it turned to me playing with a whole band. And then the climax of my Maui thing is I had this weekly show at this really popular place called Charley’s. So we played there for a year and that helped me really develop my skills of live performances and band. That’s kind of what helped to get me get signed.
Can you talk about where you’re at with your upcoming album? I was signed about a year and a half ago, then about March of this year I got the call to pack up my stuff and go to L.A. to record my album. So that’s what I did. I had to quit my job and move to L.A. I was there for two months and recording. We just busted it out really fast and so it’s done recording. I got back to Maui about two months ago and then I’ve been just doing gigs and waiting for the release date. I just got word from my manager that it’s coming out on Valentine’s Day week. How romantic. (laughs)
Is it going to be distributed nationally or worldwide?
Yeah, we have really good distribution, although it’s an independent label. I’m their first artist that will be more mainstream. So we’re releasing it in Hawaii, all over the country, Japan, Korea, Canada and most of Europe.
How would you describe your sound and musical style?
I would say it’s funky, acoustic, soul. It’s acoustic because I play acoustic guitar, but I’m very influenced by soulful R&B music. But I also like to rap and do funny rhymes, so I have to add the funky in there.
Do you write a lot of your music?
I write all of it. My album coming out is totally all my music.
What are a lot of your songs about?
A lot about relationships, the good and the bad. So basically just the struggles with every day reality of a 22-year-old chick growing up in Hawaii. Just trying to tell yourself to pursue your goals and not to give up. I even wrote a song about being a barista because when I was on Maui and waiting for the album I was working at a coffee shop. So it’s kind of a funky song about me being a barista and how frustrating it is and how I don’t want to be making coffee because I want to be playing music. It’s very real. I don’t make stuff up.
Upcoming/ongoing gigs:
We’re doing a weekly gig on Saturdays from 5 to 7 p.m. at Tiki’s in Waikiki. We also have a gig on Oct. 21 at 8 p.m. at Indigo.
