Aka: DJ Betty

Age: 19

High School: Kaimuki

Music profession: Mixshow and club DJ

Musical accomplishments: I actually have two that I’m really proud of. 1) I started radio right when I turned 18. 2) Opening for Adam Freeland, a Grammy-nominated UK artist as my break into Hawaii’s electronica scene.

How did you get into DJing? A series of events led up to it. I started attending local dance events when I was 14, so that’s when the love for music began. At the time I was going out with my ex-boyfriend, who happened to be learning to DJ from a friend. He would always drag me along for the sessions and after a while I started to catch on, but he didn’t want to teach me. During the process, I met James Coles, who a couple of months later started a program called Musical Youth of Hawaii. It’s an after-school program that teaches kids how to DJ. I was the program’s first student. I learned a lot from James, and it could possibly be the best thing that happened to me. After a year there was nothing else to be taught, so I broke off and started to do club gigs on my own.

Any ongoing/upcoming gigs? These are all ongoing events: Wicked Wednesdays at Venus, AGN’s Wonderlounge at The W Hotel on Fridays, Body English at Noblesse Nightclub on Saturdays and The Heavens at Club 939 on Sundays.

Musical inspiration: Hawaii’s local DJs have definitely influenced the way I played and helped me grow - DJs like Mr. Goodvybe, DJ Edit, Paul Brandon, Mixmaster B, Mike D, James Coles and my husband, DJ Technique.

Most memorable musical moment? It has to be when I was 15 at Zanzabar. It was the first time I’d ever played at an official nightclub. It was a crazy night to start my career because I played for a crowd of about 1,800 (give or take).
