Age: 19
Hometown: Mililani
High school graduated from: Iolani
Musical occupation? I am currently the drummer/percussionist for the prestigious local group Kapena.
How did you get your start in music? I first started playing the drums when I was 7 years old. My cousin from California inspired me to become a drummer. He brought his drum pad to Hawaii after joining his high school band and showed me how to do a drum roll. After that day I was hooked, and my love for music grew ever since.
Current/ongoing gigs? I have done many jazz gigs in the past, but my current gigs consist of performing with Kapena.
Musical accomplishments? My most recent accomplishments occurred while attending the University of North Texas as a jazz major during the fall 2006 semester. I was one of two freshmen to be selected into one of their jazz bands. I was part of the 8 o’clock jazz band playing drumset. During my musical career I have been fortunate enough to play with jazz greats such as Makoto Ozone, Tiger Okoshi, Gabe Baltazar, Bruce Hamada, Noel Okimoto, Abraham Lagrimas, Dean Taba, Conrad Herwig and so many more. During high school, I participated in the Honolulu Youth Symphony for seven years and the select jazz band for four years. Also during the summer of 2004, I attended an arts camp in Michigan called Interlochen. I was selected to play for the World Youth Symphonic Band and the top jazz band.
Favorite music to listen to? I seriously like to indulge myself in every type of music, but mostly jazz and R&B.
Upcoming gigs? The next gig is Duke’s at Outrigger Waikiki on May 26 from 4 to 6 p.m.
