Crystal L. Akana
Age: 23
Hometown: Kailua
Occupation: Your morning cup of coffee ... aka radio personality on KDNN Island 98.5’s Lanai’s Morning Madness known for your Choke Traffic.
Gigs or events involved with: Busy with gigs every weekend, hosting grand openings, birthday parties, weddings, etc. Going on three years involved with the Muscular Dystrophy Association and hosting its annual soiree at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, Saturday, April 21.
Favorite genre of music: Hawaiian style and reggae of course. Actually I love um all - gospel, hip hop, R&B, oldies, alternative, country, rock. The only music my ears can’t handle is heavy metal - yuck!
Musical accomplishments: To be able to sing anywhere - church, with friends, at events - is an accomplishment. The fact that the Lord gave me a voice to sing is a huge blessing.
Most memorable musical moment: It would have to be with my family. We have what’s called hoike at our Lanakila church, and when my Akana ohana goes up on choir to sing we sound like the Von Trapp family from the movie The Sound of Music.
Clubs you can be spotted at: Ohhhhh, I love this one. I recently found my fave, Pearl at Ala Moana. I absolutely love the people and the vibe there. Beau (owner) and Alvin (GM) are great! Also can’t forget Mai Tai’s where all the locals hang out, The W at the end of Waikiki, and the Monkey Bar at The Hyatt Regency Hotel.
The best music to dance to: Whatever can make me move and make me wanna touch my toes. (laughs) Nah, nah, all but techno.
First taste of music: Wow, there’s several I can remember. My daddy’s oldies but goodies he would always play in our van. Back in my Pop Warner days as a cheerleader for Kaneohe Knights singing on the bus. Oh yeah, at church too.
Upcoming projects: Still working on my album and hopefully to get involved in a musical play. So if you need me, holler.
