Music occupation? DJ (Goth, dark ‘80s, darkwave, ethereal, industrial, EBM, dark electro)
How did you get into the music business? I was a DJ for a radio station called KPRG 89.3 FM. That was about 11 years ago, then I relocated my radio show, A Feast of Friends, to KTUH 90.3 FM every Saturday night from 6 to 9.
What is your favorite music to play? I like all types of music. I grew up in a family that loved music. So growing up in the ‘80s, I would always see my older brother listening to his rock music and new wave collection as he was getting ready to hit the clubs with his friends. He had vinyl collections of everything from A-ha, Pet Shop Boys, Pink Floyd, the Doors. This exposed me to find appreciation not only for the ‘80s which we call today, but also for the classic rock genre. The music stayed with me all through the years, and later he didn’t want his vinyl collection anymore so he passed them all to me. Then I started exploring a darker genre of music called Deathrock. I prefer to play Goth, ‘80s, dark-wave, industrial, dark narrative rock music and dark electro on my show and at the clubs.
Where can you be spotted around town? Every Wednesday I’m at Next Door spinning for Acid Wash from 9 to 11 p.m. and every first Saturday of the month. I’m also at Next Door spinning at Camera Obscura. I support the local art, music, culture and theater scene in Hawaii, so I’m usually also around downtown for First Fridays looking at exhibits in galleries, meeting new people, hanging out with friends and looking for local talents to interview on my show.
What is your biggest musical accomplishment? I have to say one of my biggest musical accomplishments is giving back to the community by assisting non-profit groups. I take pride in helping others with their goals and worthy causes by assisting them to promote their projects and bringing awareness to the community. As a music and club promoter, I had a fundraiser at Camera Obscura, which was a benefit for the Lokahi Giving Project December 2007.Then earlier in the year, we threw a benefit for the Life Foundation, an event called the Glam King Casanova Cabaret, among others. Camera Obscura will be having another benefit on Saturday, April 5, for a non-profit organization called Joey’s Feline Friends.
As a DJ, I’ve spun for DJs against AIDS, a benefit for the Life Foundation, put together by OOspot. I’ve also spun for Girlfest and Ladyfest events in the past.
