I-Bei Lin

Hometown: Kaohsiung, Taiwan

Occupation: Cello professor at UH-Manoa

Gigs or events you will be performing at? Faculty Recital at UH-Manoa’s Orvis Auditorium on March 24 at 7:30. In this recital we will not only perform classical repertoire such as Beethoven and Chopin, but also the Hawaii premiere of the Jazz Trio with Cello by Claude Bolling.

Musical accomplishments: Gave a solo debut recital at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in 2005, presented by ARTISTS INTERNATIONAL in New York City as the recipient of a Special Presentation Award. I have won prizes in several solo competitions, including The Artist International Competition in New York, the String Division of the Taiwan National Concert Artist Competition, the Alpha Delta Kappa International Fine Arts Grants Competition, the First America Midwest Young Artist Competition, the Northwestern University Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition, the Chi-Mei Young Artist Competition in Taiwan, and the Taiwan National Music Competition. I was the featured soloist with the National Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan in 2004. Recently, I was selected as one of the finalists at Pro Musicis International Award at Carnegie Hall in 2006.

How did you get your start in music? I started piano when I was 6 years old, and started cello at age of 8. Soon after, I got into a music school in Taiwan. We were required to play the second instrument other than piano, so the conductor at the school ask me to play cello.

Most memorable musical moment: The debut recital at Carnegie Hall in 2005 - quite nervous, but rewarding.

Upcoming projects: European tour (including solo recital in Vienna, Austria) in October 2007.

Musical inspiration: From several cello masters such as Yo-Yo Ma.
