Music occupation? Radio and Club Deejay for KTUH 90.3 FM (Friday Afternoon Bashment 3-6 p.m.) and Empire Sound.
What is your favorite music to play? Reggae, particularly lovers rock.
Where can you be spotted around town? I’m not out and about as much as I used to be. I still have a show at KTUH weekly and you can see me at many KTUH events. Also, I am usually around at some of the bigger reggae concerts; for example, I deejayed at the Bob Fest at the Waterpark in February.
What is your biggest musical accomplishment?
I think my biggest accomplishment has been exposing the people of Hawaii to the many different facets of reggae music. When I first started on the radio in 1997, I think I was one of the few deejays to play lovers rock and dancehall. Now I think those two types of reggae have increased greatly in popularity. As part of Empire Sound, we really were part of the foundation in introducing dancehall culture to Hawaii, especially with our weekly Flex party at Grumpy’s back in 2002-2003. Others had done little dancehall things before with some success, but there was never anything as successful as our weekly Saturday night a few years back. We played great music and really kept the people entertained, I think. Even today people still tell me how much they miss those days.
How is Hawaii’s music scene different from other places you’ve been/lived?
I think the scene here is vibrant, though definitely nothing like some cities on the Mainland. In terms of reggae, people are far more into reggae than people are in, say, California, but I don’t think there is as much knowledge about the music as there is in, say, San Francisco. People here love their reggae, but there is no comparison between here and New York, Jamaica or Tokyo. Those three places have the most happening reggae scenes. Japan, on the other hand, has embraced reggae fully and there is far better accessibility to music and far more concerts coming through there as well.
