Is music a full-time career? Yeah, I do music full time.During the day I just take care of things. Right now I’m planning a couple of shows and a little tour for some friends who will be visiting from the Mainland. I’m trying to plan this all-girl tour in September and it’s going to be Oahu,Kona and Maui.I’m really excited to have them play and I’m taking all the girls with me. I’m also starting a foundation called the Lilikoi Foundation, and it’s going to be a foundation that helps women in transition. I’m also writing a book. I’m a poet, so I’m writing a book of poetry. It’s kind of a collection of poetry that I’ve written over the years.
What’s your musical style? I have this thing that describes my music called Oregano Blue. It’s like original music influenced by reggae and rhythm and blues.
Musical accomplishments: I’m proud of creating an album that is truly the music from within me. I am proud that I did it on my own pretty much - just me and my business partner. We started a record label called Pakipika Productions, and I was very lucky and blessed to be able to be in control of it. To me, I think that was a huge accomplishment.
The Hoku Hanohano Awards was a big event for you this year, as you took home the Hoku for “Most Promising Artist"as well as two other nominations.Was it a big accomplishment for you? Yeah, because my whole life I’ve always watched the Hokus on TV,and I’ve always loved Hawaiian music.I always looked forward to being a part of the Hokus and I finally got that chance. And you know what? I was kind of sad that I didn’t get a chance to sing, and I was telling my boyfriend how disappointed I was that they didn’t pick me to sing.And so he goes,“You should just be thankful that you just got nominated.” And so my boyfriend really put it into perspective for me and he made me really grateful about my nominations. So much so that it didn’t matter if I really won or not. And that took a lot of weight off the Hoku.So when I won the Hoku it was a wonderful feeling,but I still know what’s more important.There’s a bigger picture for me.
