Let’s give a big round of applause to this year’s Star 101.9 Battle of the Bands winners, Stoic F.B.
The weekly competition, which started in early November with 12 contenders, concluded last week Tuesday with the final onstage battle between Phoenix Rose and Stoic F.B. at Pipeline Cafe. And there to watch it all go down was emcee of the annual competition, STAR 101.9’s Afternoon Drive on-air personality, Maleko.
Ultimately, Stoic F.B. left with the grand prize, studio time from Pipeline Cafe and a trip for two to Los Angeles to meet with an A&R representative of a major recording studio.
Ecstatic to accept the prize are Stoic F.B. band members Ryan Carney, rhythm guitarist/vocalist and Kaiser grad; Alika Lyman, lead guitarist and Mililani grad; Daniel Downs, bassist and Kalani grad, and Eli Oguma, drummer of Ewa Beach.
“We were totally excited when we won because we did not expect it,” says Carney. “We usually rehearse two to three times a week, but before the semi-finals we were rehearsing every chance we got.”
The 27-year-old-and-younger group hopes to use this win as a stepping stone in its move to pursue music on the Mainland.
“It’s very hard to get anywhere playing rock music in Hawaii,” says Carney, who writes most of the songs for the group.“We’ve all been in bands in Hawaii for the past six years or so, and we want to make a move.”
The group, which describes its music as alternative rock with jazz sensibility, currently has one album released,Under These Moments, which was completed in November 2008. And they hope the demo they will be recording shortly will give them the added boost to impress record executives during their trip to L.A.
