Nikolas Rocchio of Kailua has graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York with a B.S. in aeronautical engineering. Nikolas and about 1,100 other graduates were treated to an address by U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton ... Staying closer to home, the Rev. Nancy Conley of Kahaluu will lead a pilgrimage to Kalaupapa and a retreat at St. Anthony’s in Kalihi Valley this fall (Spiritual Life Center, 523-1170) ... Dr. Monte Elias of Kailua, an emergency room physician at Straub, is at the giant ER of the Gulf states helping Hurricane Katrina victims as part of the Hawaii Disaster Medical Assistance Team/medical strike team. FEMA activated the nine-member group Aug. 30, and they flew out the next night ... Kailua’s Alfred Bloom is helping plan the annual Harvest Moon Dharmachakra Festival at 5:30 p.m. Friday in McCoy Pavilion (949-1659), honoring Buddha’s first teachings and commemorating those who died on Sept. 11, 2001. Alfred is a retired Buddhist priest and emeritus religion professor at UH ... Speaking of the University of Hawaii, astronomy professor Gareth Wynn-Williams of Kailua may have some answers to earthlings’ questions following the PBS Nova series Origins, such as “Where in the heck did we come from anyway?” He’ll discuss the series at 7 p.m. Sept. 14 in the PBS studio (973-1989). Keep in mind Gareth has seen many, many stars in his career, and he wrote the book The Fullness of Space ... Another Kailua resident, Kathleen Berg, received a star of her own last week, becoming the first female brigadier general in the Hawaii Air National Guard. Viola Indie, led the Hawaii delegation at the national convention of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, held Aug. 20-25 in Salt Lake City. Viola has also chaired projects for the group’s 15-state Western Conference ... Diane Drigot and her environmental team from the Marine base flew to St. Louis last week for the White House Conference on Cooperative Conservation. They shared how military/civilian cooperation has helped sustain Mokapu Peninsula’s red-footed booby colony and how amphibious assault vehicles protect plants and birds. Also attending were Kaneohe Bay researchers Celia Smith and Cindy Hunter ... Former Windward Rep. David Pendleton, now the governor’s senior policy analyst, spoke at last week’s launching of Transition magazine for graduating high school teens ... Until now, Ben Baniaga has been best known in Kaneohe for his work with the Pali Lions Club. Then came Aug. 28 and a certain Little League baseball game in Pennsylvania. Lucille was a strong voice behind the rehabilitation of the Boettcher Estate and was helping to establish a historic record of Kailua ... Kainalu Elementary School vice principal Paul Graham would like to put the Marines into that history for Aug. 27, 2005. Staff Sgt. Charles Moore and his crew of Marines, just back from Iraq duty, helped the Boy Scouts beautify the campus that day. “They did an awesome job,” Paul says
