The Island Mini Mart by Kin Wah in Kaneohe is reopening this week, and a new 7-Eleven is hiring on Kuulei Road in Kailua, Meanwhile, Nadine Tokuzato, proprietor of a rural-style convenience shop, announces a special sale on T-shirts at Waikane Store, which is celebrating its 110th anniversary (239-8522). Boiled peanuts and fried shrimp in a historic old building, just up Kamehameha Highway from the Waiahole Poi Factory. Can’t beat that ...
Congratulations to Aikahi and Lanikai elementary schools, which were recognized as outstanding during the 2007-2008 Hawaii’s Distinguished Schools program ... When Hospice Hawaii handed out its 2007 community awards recently, one of them went to Jim Rexroat, a pharmacist at the Kailua Times Supermarket. “Jim goes as far as personally delivering medications to the Kailua Hospice Home,” the agency stated, “and clients drive from Honolulu to the Kailua Times specifically to see him because he always has what they need” ...

Kaaawa resident Hester Kamin spends most of her time in town as education director at Hawaii Theatre. Right now, the word is Rumpelstiltskin, a pantomime show of the famous fairy tale featuring puppets up to 14 feet tall. Katie Baird, who graduated from Kailua High in 1976, moved on to become an assistant economics professor at the University of Washington-Tacoma. Now she’s won a Fulbright award and is spending her eight-month sabbatical teaching at the University of Basques in Bilbao, Spain, with her husband and two sons (who are enrolled in a Spanish-only school). And - surprise of surprises - Katie’s parents, Mary and Pete Knerr of Kailua, are already planning to stop by in May ...
Back here at home, Enchanted Lake school librarian Terry Korpi seeks a handyman/woman to build some display boards to showcase students’work (266-7800) ... Salvador Marti of Kaneohe has deployed to Iraq as a cannon crew member from the 2nd Battalion, 11th Field Artillery at Schofield Barracks ... Michele Elliott of Waimanalo went to Vegas and won $7,500 on the downtown slots; so did Kaneohe’s Maria Bacoro ($6,500), Kaneohe’s Gilbert Ahlo ($6,000), Kailua’s Marie Kwiatkowski ($5,200) and Edmund Tawara of Kailua ($4,000, twice).
