Returning recently to the scene of Kahaluu Neighborhood Board’splanting project (reported in the March 5 Windward Islander), David Henkin and Jessica Wooley discovered nearly one-fourth of the 400 naupaka plants had either been chopped off or yanked out of the ground and tossed into Waihee marsh. Volunteers installed the fledgling hedge along Kamehameha Highway Feb. 16 to protect wandering birds. So David and Jessica logged in three more hours replanting the vandalized greenery ...
The saints will battle it out for spelling honors at the 2008 state spelling bee Sunday at WCC’s Paliku Theatre. Timothy Cho have received his reports from Iraq about two “morale booster” puppies his platoon adopted after finding them under a mud shack in a marketplace. Kahuku’s Emiko Conner received her BS in nursing at the end of fall semester at Washington State University in Pullman. The Eagle has flown, announced Kailua Boy Scout Troop 311. Ryan Lau received his Eagle Scout rank last week in ceremonies at St. John Vianney for a project he planned, coordinated and executed with 40 volunteers to rehabilitate a three-bedroom apartment at Mayor Wright Housing. A Punahou honor student, Ryan also keeps busy in the band and several school sports ... With the Kailua Elementary imu benefit this weekend, Todd Hendricks is preparing for some extra work. Kailua’s imu guru says they have to dig the pit on the school’s campus each time, and then fill it up and put the grass back after all the meats are cooked and out of the ground. “The kids work pretty hard, too,” he adds ...
