Receiving a gold medal for valor May 16 in city ceremonies was Branden Ige (Castle 2004 cum laude). The event honored emergency medical personnel and lifeguards for courage and bravery. An EMT, he and his partner answered a call and found a man lying on the hood of a parked car. They woke him up, but he struck out at them. Branden was able to restrain the man until police arrived, and then tended to his partner, who had been pummeled by the apparently drunken man. “Branden’s not a big guy,” says his mom, Tammy Ige, proudly, “but he held the guy down. It must be the adrenaline” ...
Speaking of Castle grads, when the Knights’ bus caravan lumbered down Kaneohe’s favorite parade route on graduation night (May 31), the crowd went wild and the fireworks soared. What a great send-off for the cheering kids inside ... Well, folks, Kailua singer Barbara Higbie‘s back on for 7:30 p.m. this Saturday at the Atherton studio. McDonald’s of Hawaii has distributed $2,500 scholarships to 10 of its top student employees, and that includes recent Kalaheo High graduate Ken Uchida,who works at the Kaneohe Marine base restaurant. Ken plans to attend UH-Manoa ... Herbert Ziegler and Margot Henriksen of Kaneohe are panelists following the screening of Imaginary Witness: Hollywood and the Holocaust. It will be shown at 7 p.m. June 19 in Krauss Hall at UH-Manoa. Both are associate history professors at UH (956-8244) ... In Hawaii’s group of 19 brilliant young scientists at the International Science Fair in Atlanta last month was Kamehameha senior (now graduate) Micah Maetani of Kaneohe. Mark, who’s heading for Stanford this fall, came home with a $3,000 U.S. savings bond and a gold medallion for his study, “Growth Inhibition of Metastatic Prostate Cancer: Effect of Methanolic Extracts from Various Nuts” ...
