Four brave Windward talents enter “a castle of mad science and mass seduction” June 25-July 27 as cast members of Manoa Valley Theatre’s Rocky Horror Show (988-6131). They are Pomai Lopez, Tony Young and Anny Moniz of Kaneohe; and Erin Picardy of Kailua ... Called “probably the last of the old guard of the insurance industry to retire,” Kaneohe’s Ron Hashimoto is bowing out at AIG Hawaii on June 30 after four decades in the industry.
He’s also a familiar face in the Puohala Makule League, Kaneohe Little League and Mid-Pac Country Club. AIG president Robin Campaniano calls him “an unselfish leader” who is well-respected for his knowledge, integrity and business leadership. Ron was executive vp and COO before retiring ... Also retiring is Kalaheo High principal James Schlosser after 37 years with the DOE. The high school “has played a central role in my educational career and my life in general,” Jim says, but it’s time to go ...
Instead of relaxing this week, Laie Elementary teacher Barbara Jean Kahawaii is at workshops with Research Experiences for Teachers at UHManoa. Participation boosts her own knowledge and supports curriculum, computer laptops and lab equipment for her students’ lessons in science, technology, engineering and math ... Waimanalo homestead resident Jaels Mauhili-Kaneakua is doing well at St. Louis School, thank you. For example, he won the Noa Webster Aulii Scholarship, a Hawaii Army National Guard Gold Citizen Award and will start his senior year as student body president ...

The good news is there were two recipients of the Windward Community College Chancellor’s Award at graduation ceremonies last month. Mikki O’Phelan, who has been an involved student and advocate all over campus for a dozen years, received the award (“I was in shock!”) from Angela Meixell at the May 17 event. The other honoree, K.C. Collins (mentioned in last week’s column), has left WCC to apply her fund-raising expertise at Castle Medical Center ... Raul Rivera of Kaneohe has joined the UH West Oahu staff as information technology specialist.
Raul has previously saved the day for IT systems at Booz Allen Hamilton, HPU and Bishop Museum ... Congratulations to award-winning Punahou swimmer Michelle Yoshida of Kaneohe who is among 12 student athletes inducted this year into the Hawaii High School Hall of Honor ... Firefighters Tip of the Month: During these dry summer days, be careful with fireworks, matches and lighters when you’re around wildland vegetation. And go to the Kailua fireworks show July 4 instead of creating your own pyrotechnic display at home ... The latest naturalist sculptures by Kahaluu landscape designer Leland Miyano are on view now through Aug. 24 at Honolulu Academy of Arts. Leland also will discuss Historia Naturalia Et Artificialia at 10 a.m. July 5 at the academy (532-8700) ...
Essays, interviews and teachers’ recommendations for Windward fifth-graders Jene’e Brown of Ahuimanu Elementary and Jai-Sun Brown of Le Jardin won them a trip to Japan in July as two of eight Junior Ambassadors from Hawaii, sponsored by the Japan America Society here. They will meet up in Fukuoka with peers from around the world (all 350 of them) for homestays and a global youth camp ... Ryan Renio of Kaneohe made the President’s Honor Roll for spring semester at Washington State University in Pullman, Wash.
