When Paul Macri leads the Calvary Episcopal Church missions team to Juarez in October, he’ll bring his newly adopted 8-year-old daughter with him to visit her former home at a Mexican orphanage. Besides having a new family in Hawaii, the little girl’s dream is to be an actress, and it’s just around the corner, according to Paul’s July 23 e-mail: “Next week she is scheduled to be in a shoot in Hollywood for a bi-lingual Little Caesar’s Pizza commercial!” ...
The Kaneohe production of Miss Saigon this fall will have some authentic costuming, thanks to a Vietnam trip planned by Paliku Theatre costumer Evette Tanoue. She’ll wait until auditions are over this week so she can have correct measurements in hand for the shopping trip. Also planned, a visit to the U.S. embassy relic, scene of the helicopter exodus that’s replicated in the play. Her travel guide is Thanh-Lo Sananikone, who fled Vietnam in the 1970s and now owns TAF Travel. In Hawaii’s small-world style, they met through East-West Center friends Gary and Apolonia Stice of Kaneohe, whose daughter Jade was in New York’s Miss Saigon ...
Shea Briar of Kailua (Academy of the Pacific 2006) graduated from basic training with the U.S. Navy at the Great Lakes Naval Recruit Training Command near Chicago with honors, and followed up by completing Master of Arms A School in Texas. Shea reports to Bangor, Wash., for a two-year assignment ... Missing its own welcome party at the new canoe halau June 27, the Iosepa finally made it back from the Big Island “just prior to the Fourth of July holiday.” The 57-foot voyaging canoe then got pulled into position and cleaned up by the crew for its official exhibit at Polynesian Cultural Center. Stay tuned for the new grand opening date. The welcoming party went off as planned anyway, and a good time was had by all, despite the missing guest of honor ...

Micah Maetani of Kaneohe (Kamehameha 2008) has won a $5,000 scholarship from the Ke Alii Pauahi Foundation to study this fall at Stanford. He’s currently a summer intern at the National Cancer Research Institute in Frederick, Md. ... At 80 years young, Ogden King Myers has decided to seek the true meaning and purpose of art by opening a gallery, The Way of the Artful Mind, in Waimanalo. A New York native, world traveler, artist, designer and engineer, he’s taught dance on Moorea and once painted Marlon Brando‘s boat. Krishna Chatterjee of Waimanalo has joined the rebranded Kahala aloha wear manufacturer as manager of its first retail store (at Ala Moana Center). Krishna previously worked at Jamba Juice and is a certified yoga instructor. He and wife Taryn are expecting the first edition of their own brand (a little Chatterjee) this summer ...
