Fifth-graders may not be a quick study for romance and etiquette, but don’t tell that to St. Mark Lutheran teacher Victoria Flores. In observance of Valentine’s Day and Friendship Day Feb. 19, her students will dress up in their “nice” clothes and have high tea together, munching on little sandwiches and cakes made by their parents. “The tables will be decorated with centerpieces, tablecloths and candles,” Victoria explains. “Appropriate manners will be learned and practiced as well as intellectual conversation” ...
Army Staff Sgt. Taylor Morel of Kailua has returned from Iraq to his 39th Military Police Company based in Minden, La., where he’s a squad leader with 14 years of service ... Kaneohe residents Lauren Sandborn and Ryan Zukeran recently toured the Pearl Harbor shipyard to expand their knowledge of career options there. Ryan already apprenticed in Shop 98 doing rigging and lifting. He has a degree in finance from Hawaii Pacific University. Lauren won a four-year robotics scholarship from the shipyard last summer to study engineering ...
Mayor Mufi Hannemann recognized both Amber Aduja and her brother William (both of Kaneohe) for their recent pageant successes and community service. Amber (mentioned in an earlier column) is National American Miss Jr. Pre-Teen Queen for ages 7-9, and William won the national title for America’s Fabulous Faces, Boy Overall Supreme. Amber and her friends also raised $1,200 for the Lokahi Giving Project during its Jan. 30 fishnet donation drive for Haiti and for Hawaii’s needy families (by Windward City) ... Kaneohe’s Jordan Kamae is on the fall dean’s list at the University of Montana Western in Dillon ...
Kaneohe musician and luthier Bill Griffin of the Saloon Pilots is stepping off the island this month for a brief tour with the Cache Valley Drifters in California ... He’s 83 years old, but Ernie Soares hasn’t slowed down much. You may have seen the lifelong Kaneohe resident in the new Honda Windward commercials, or on previous TV shows with Diane Ako. Ernie initially found local fame in his retirement hobby: He builds 4-foot-tall doll houses to give to charity ...
Neighborhood board members can grow very committed to community causes. After scheduling a meeting of the Kailua board’s parks and rec committee, for example, chairman Shawn Christensen said they’ll look into the matter of a missing buoy, among other things. “Still awaiting word from DOBOR about it,” Shawn reports. “I have offered to dive and install the buoy for them, but have not had a reply to this request.” (The meeting’s at 7 p.m. Feb. 18 at Kailua District Park) ...
