Picked to moderate a national panel on constitutional rights (airing live from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday via audio webcast from the American Bar Association) is Enchanted Lake attorney Mark Murakami. A Kailua High graduate, he’s one of four expert speakers who will tackle gun control.
The U.S. Supreme Court is set to hear a case on the issue in March. Mark works for Damon Key Leong Kupchak Hastert and was recently promoted to commander in the U.S.
Coast Guard Reserve ... I wonder if Mark saw the Russian planes flying over Kaneohe Bay last month. It’s said the huge planes were contracted to deliver helicopters to the Marine base ...
Speaking of the Marines, Paul Fortunato, now a full colonel and head of USMC safety nationwide, flew from D.C. to Oahu recently for meetings. The former Ahuimanu man was seen (by me and my husband at the same table) at Haleiwa Joe’s enjoying a nice fish dinner. What’s wrong with this picture? Paul’s wife Sarah and their four children were snowed in that night during the East Coast storms. She pointed out by phone that shoveling snow in Virginia was a far cry from Paul’s “safe” duty in the tropics ...

Kathy Summers, baker to hundreds of relatives and friends, has published her third bread book, The Best and Easiest Handmade Breads (“from start to finish in 1 and 1/2 hours”). Why a third one? “Times are hard now,” says the Enchanted Lake grandma. “Homemade bread is inexpensive and comfortingly filling.” In fact, she swears her nine children are mostly made of it. Kathy also trains service dogs, but tries to keep the dough out of reach. Two family favorites: whole wheat bread and pretzels. Maunawili second-grader Lily McDermott set up a stand selling lemonade and baked goods (anything from Kathy Summers’ clan?), and she raised $160 for Haiti relief ... Kaneohe’s Rock Works music school presents its winter concert at 6 p.m. Saturday at Hawaii Convention Center, directed by Brian Albus and featuring a dozen bands and 30-plus songs. New classes start March 6 (782-9695) ...
Speaking of performing arts, Hair fans can spot Kailua’s Caroline Lawo and Brianna Pratt, and Kaneohe’s Pomai Lopez, Garrett Taketa and Brandi Firman in the Manoa Valley Theatre production March 4-21 (988-6131) ...
