Despite the rumblings going on elsewhere about the Hawaii Youth Correctional Facility, teachers in Olomana School’s secured classrooms have some positive things to share about the students’ Halloween costume contest. According to teachers Susan Thain and Melissa Zen, the results were pretty cool. King Tut, a lion and others emerged from the creative process, which was limited to newspaper, masking tape, makeup and their own imaginations. “The kids were wonderful,” says Susan, “and the outcome was great. It’s amazing what these kids came up with, and they made all the decisions” ...

Speaking of creativity, Kailua printmaker David B. Smith has been inducted into Britain’s Royal Society of Painter Printmakers. Just call him Associate Royal Etcher Smith. David was inducted last May in London, where he once studied and worked. He returns when he can to participate in the respected Artichoke Print Workshop in London’s Shakespeare Business Centre ... Ramsey Ah Nee (Castle ‘04) is an Air Force crew chief with the 555th Aircraft Maintenance Unit in Italy, but he’s currently been deployed to that other country starting with an “I” ... You’ve got one more weekend to take in Lanikai’s fall melodrama of tycoons and scoundrels (see calendar). The cast of over-actors working hard for no pay are: Jim Duca, Wanda Dove, Valli Rapaport, Carol Nichols, Derek Esibill, Courtney Doyle, Lew Lappert, Kathleen Thompson, Bill McRoberts and Keith Merriam ... Kailua businesswomen Gloria Garvey and Brook Gramann will talk branding - product ID, that is, not searing cow hide - to a Small Business Hawaii breakfast Nov. 17 in Honolulu ... Speaking of Lanikai, resident Brenda Hillebrenner, who has devoted much time to directing children’s plays there, has landed the role of Bernadette in the award-winning Tom Rooney comedy, Flaming Idiots, set for Manoa Valley Theatre Nov. 16-Dec. 4 (933-6131). The fun centers around an up-and-coming health food restaurant ... Koolauloa resident Sunny Greer is the new cultural programs director within the state DLNR’s Historic Preservations Division; she’s now working to identify sites for protection ... Kalua turkey lovers must not dilly dally with the gobble gobble. Lanette Mahelona says KEY Project sold nearly 300 tickets in two days, and Castle High is sold out. Buckz Boyz (Kailua’s Buck Rodgers and his boys) are playing Sunset on the Beach this weekend, hopping on the big stage at 4 p.m. Saturday ... Happy 230th Birthday to the U.S. Marines. Cake and costumes highlight a celebratory ceremony at 10 a.m. Thursday at Dewey Square ... The National Council of English Teachers has honored Allison Trecker of Kailua for “excellence in writing.” Allison and three other Hawaii students won 2005 NCTE recognition for a submitted sample and an impromptu essay. Topics weren’t high brow dribble either. One was a letter to the principal arguing for or against cell phones in school. The other was an editorial on teen obesity and how to combat it ... Army Staff Sgt. Brian Kanoa (Kalaheo ‘95) is a cable systems installer assigned to Kuwait. But he took a break recently to play in the Operation Hardwood-Hoops with the Troops basketball tournament at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait City. Collegiate coaches worked with the “best military players” for the eight-team, double elimination tourney ...
