With the assistance of Kaneohe teen Chelsea Morris, Gov. Linda Lingle declared March 14-20 to be “Healthy Kids and Teen Week.” The proclamation was initiated by the Punahou student as part of her senior project to raise awareness about childhood obesity. And she’s serious about it. Last year Chelsea was the state’s finalist to a national Young Epidemiology Scholars competition in Washington, D.C. Her project? Native Hawaiian Adolescents: Contrasting Ethnic Groups as a Predictor of Obesity, Type 2 Diabetes and Future Cardiovascular Disease ...
Kalaheo students, meanwhile, are helping people who don’t have an obesity problem. Through Hoops for Haiti, three school clubs recently raised more than $800 for the American Red Cross/Haiti Relief ... Marines and sailors are thriving at Kahuna’s Sports Bar and Grill on the Marine base.
