Kahuku High social studies teacher Leslie Stewart is one of four high school teachers picked to study in Turkey June 27-July 10, sponsored by the Turkish Cultural Foundation, which should help her pack a global perspective into her curriculum. If all goes well on the world stage, Leslie is scheduled to tour Hagia Sophia, the Hippodrome and the Blue Mosque in Istanbul, space camp at Izmir, the underground city in Cappadocia and various bazaars, museums, tombs and schools. The H1N1 virus claimed the life of Kailua High graduate Jacob Ryan Schmidt, 27, on April 28 in Texas, where he lived with his wife and two stepchildren. His Honolulu mother Sharon McFadden hopes to set up a nonprofit foundation to educate people on the virus’devastating effects. Castle High grad and Olympic athlete Bryan Clay isn’t slowing down. On May 30 he won his second decathlon victory at the Hypo-Meeting at Goetzis, Austria ... Kaneohe artist Pati O’Neal has learned that her work has been accepted into the American Society of Aviation Artists 2010 International Aerospace Art Exhibition. Pati is one of 42 artists picked for the show, which opens June 8 in the San Diego Aerospace Museum. Sea Life Park has brought Jerry Pupillo on board as its new general manager. He replaces Jesus (Jesus Bravo, who returned to Mexico) and says he’s “thrilled” for the opportunity. Jerry started getting to know the staff and animals on Memorial Day, but he’s been marketing Oahu visitor attractions for two decades, much of it at the former Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park. Jerry graduated from Hawaii Loa College, before it became the home of the national champion HPU softball team. It must be something about the green grass of Howard Okita field in Kaneohe.
