Retired professor and Kaaawa poet Kathryn Waddell Takara will receive an American Book Award Sunday in San Francisco from the Before Columbus Foundation, which honors “literary excellence without limitation or restrictions” as voted on by other writers. She is one of 13 so honored this year for her work, Pacific Raven: Hawai’i Poems, published by Pacific Raven Press, for which she is one of the publishers.
The daughter of the late Buffalo Soldier and pioneer black veterinarian William Waddell, Kathryn has shared her poetry with a worldwide audience as well as teaching ethnic studies, African American politics and more at UH Manoa, Tourmalines: Beyond the Ebony Portal is her latest book
