Del.icio.usHawaii’s 1,000 Friends honored Kailua’s Muriel Seto Sunday as its Unsung Hero of 2005 for her work in moving successfully to get Kawai Nui Marsh a Ramsar-designated Wetland of International Importance. That took nearly three years. But then, Muriel’s been championing the marsh for more than three decades ... Castle High Knights John Ufuti, Lihikai Domingo, Clint Daniel and Matagi Toilolo were picked to play in the H.U.B. Senior Football Classic All-Star Game at 7 p.m. Friday at Aloha Stadium ... On a different level, the school’s Turkey Trot winners were Danny Owens for the boys and Kelsey Takahashi for the girls ... Doing what he does best, actor/sumotori Ace Yonamine has a scene in Memoirs of a Geisha, the much talked-about film that opens here Friday. “They created a sumo ring with seating at the Sony Studios in California for it,” says Ace (Castle ‘90). It took four days to complete the scene with fellow Hawaii actor Anthony Begonia, pro wrestlers from Japan, the two main stars and 200-plus extras. Yes, but how did the match go, Ace? “I lost; what’s new?” Now a husband and father, Ace lives in Kaneohe, does security part time, plays “golf” at Bay View with his 3-year-old son Tiger, and stays ready for his next summons from Hollywood ... “I’ve never been so impressed,” says Hank Liljedahl. “They were so well-behaved I just shook my head.” Hank, who heads the Kailua Elks Lodge, is talking about the club’s Nov. 17 visit to third-graders at Blanche Pope Elementary, where they presented dictionaries to a classful of grateful young readers ... More giving, but this time in reverse: Children in the St. John Vianney early learning center will bring gifts to Santa Claus next Monday in a yearly tradition. This time Santa (read: U.S. Marines) will take the goodies to Iraqi children in January when they’re deployed ... Speaking of saints, the St. Anthony’s School Children’s Choir sings out in the Honolulu Hale courtyard at 6 p.m. Sunday ...

John Pietsch (Kalaheo ‘02) has completed Air Force basic training at Lackland AFB, Texas ... And Uri Ruaburo of Kailua has completed Army basic training at Fort Knox, Ky. ... Under the command of cadet Trishia Carinio, Don Omengebar and Tatum Barrett, the Castle High Marine JROTC unit claimed four second-place trophies at the recent Nanakuli Drill Competition last month (16 schools involved) ... More marching. Kahuku and Castle High musicians wore their feet out last Saturday. Marching bands from both schools did double duty - at the Kaneohe Christmas Parade in the morning and the Honolulu City Lights Parade that night ... Longtime Kahaluu volunteer Ethel Serikaku has received the third annual Betty Patberg Volunteer of the Year Award from Ke Kumu Ola O Kahaluu. She accepted the perpetual trophy Nov. 24 during a community Thanksgiving lunch served by herself and other members of the six-church coalition. Colleagues say Ethel is always there to fill any need ... In addition to Kailua stores (see calendar), Lanikai author Heather Titus will sign more copies of her signature Windward volume, Passion and Beauty, at 4 p.m. Saturday at Ward Centre Borders ... Windward Adventist School teacher Deborah Dahl has been recognized locally as a 2006 Disney Teacher Award Nominee for her classroom creativity. She now enters the national competition, which will choose four top winners next spring and one Teacher of the Year - all worth thousands of dollars in grants and professional development ... Le Jardin teacher Andria MacDonald is sharing what she learned about food safety and food-borne illness during a science seminar for teachers last summer in Washington, D.C.
