The downtown funeral home was packed Jan. 28 as former football players, friends and family celebrated the life of Kaneohe’s beloved George Gaison, 71, longtime football coach at Kamehameha (under his son Blane), Castle High (under Don Mahi, John Kapele, Ken Watanabe and Mark Kane) and the Kaneohe Pop Warner Midgets. “George was the ‘old school’ kind of coach that’s hard to find anymore,” says Mark. “He could smooth things over and calm a player down.” When times got stressful at Kamehameha, Blane said he would turn to his dad for advice:

“On fourth down, he would always say ‘Go for it.’ ” His last job - and one that he loved - was working in the cart barn at Pali Golf Course. A simple man, simple ways, and a simple life. Aloha, George ... The Windward Artists Guild has awarded scholarships to Windward intermediate school students Ruben Sele, Sebastian Bozlee, Kennesha Saito and Kori Nishitomi. The grants cover tuition and fees for a semester of Saturday classes at the Honolulu Academy of Arts ...

Ariane Hall

Ariane Hall (Kalaheo ‘04) is spending spring semester in the Disney College Program in Orlando, Fla. She was recruited by Disney for its culinary course (does that include Mouse food?). When Ariane returns to her food studies at Kapiolani Community College, the aspiring chef will do an internship here, sponsored by Disney. Proud mom, Sharone, says Ariane also cooks at home - and even cleans up after herself ... Dedicated to the musical arts is Bernie Zimbra of Kahaluu. She has been teaching it for 20 years at St. John Vianney School, and was honored for her contributions during Catholic Schools Week. (She also taught piano to my kids, and they’re all still musically inclined, so I’ll add my thanks, too) ... Speaking of music, six Windward voices will be raised high in Hawaii Opera Theatre’s Rigoletto, playing Friday, Sunday and Tuesday at Blaisdell Concert Hall (596-7858): John Mount, Patrick McNichols, Susan Cromer, Keoki Kerr and the two Larrys - Larry Whitson and Larry Wong ...

A benefit golf tournament for 9-year-old Jewel Bautista is planned for April 3, following the Jan. 30 death of her father, Gary Bautista of the Society of Seven. Gary’s SOS colleagues will participate, and entry forms for local golfers are available by fax at 922-6955 ... Award-winning Windward entertainer Sean Naauao‘s all-time hit song, Fish and Poi , is among the top five selections downloaded wireless ring tones, according to Hawaiian Telcom. The man himself will autograph copies of his latest CD, Ka ‘Eha Ke Aloha, from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at HT’s Windward Mall store (second floor) ... Laurie Ann Moyer of Kailua has achieved first honors (3.9 gpa or higher) for fall semester at Georgetown University in D.C. ... VIPs get the first crack at it Friday night, but the rest of us can try a twirl on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. It’s the Wheel of Fortune at Adasa’s celebration of its relocated boutique (now next to Kailua Beachwalk). The CHS media team took cameras and questions to Windward lawmakers on opening day at the state Legislature ... Kurt Okumura of Kaneohe made the fall dean’s list at Newman University in Wichita, Kan.
