Staying for the credits is one way to keep up with local folks in the movie business. Lincoln Kupchak grew up in the Olomana area, but nowadays you can watch his name roll by as the “visual effects editor” for several Hollywood films. The latest one I spotted was Glory Road. Lincoln has also worked on shows like Sideways, The Last Samurai and TV’s The Ghost Whisperer ... Helping the AIDS campaign is a good thing, but Baci Bistro president Bill Duval says they also joined “Oahu Dines” again today (March 1) because of the “many new diners-turned-regulars” they picked up last year. Eat out at Kailua’s Baci Bistro, Big City Diner, Cinnamon’s, Cisco’s and Boots & Kimo’s tonight, and they’ll donate part of their profits to the Life Foundation ...

Speaking of good eating, Wally Amos dropped by PACT’s Ohia Spouse Abuse Shelter recently with a bundle of his cookies for the women and keiki, who consumed them all with gusto ... Frank Dekle of Kailua reported last month for active duty at Fort Hood, Texas, as an infantryman with the U.S. Army ...

Island Insurance has hired Kaneohe finance expert Debra Chong to be its product development project manager. The Kamehameha Schools graduate has two business management degrees and comes from a similar position at Central Pacific Bank ... Waiahole’s Tongan storyteller Emil Wolfgramm presents free lectures at 11 a.m. every Saturday in March in the Honolulu Academy of Arts’ Doris Duke Theatre; it’s all part of the exhibit Life in the Pacific of the 1700s ... Amazing how creative women can be when they find the time. Retired teacher and public housing official Rowena Liu, retired restaurateur and gift shop manager Muk Lan Rice and retired computer software saleswoman Jeanne Snell have filled the Ho’omaluhia gallery with their paintings - 100 of them! - which you can see for yourself Friday through March 29 (see calendar about Saturday’s reception) ...

Malosi Toilolo has no time for oil painting. The Kailua soldier has just completed basic training with the Air National Guard at Lackland AFB, Texas ... That was King Intermediate student Kapua Kapu playing the mayor’s daughter in CPAC’s Music Man Jr. last weekend at Ron Bright Theatre. Kapua’s genes carry plenty of musical “kapus” - from her dad, Sam Kapu III, a noted island singer, her grandfather Sam Kapu Jr., the “Menehune of the Microphone” deejay, and her great-grandfather, Hawaii Calls serenader Sam Kapu Sr. Sam Jr. and Sam III have performed for earlier generations in Kaneohe ... In the Music Man audience were both grandmothers of Yoshi Wood, who played the title role in the show. One dropped by from Japan (her first trip to Hawaii) to watch Yoshi and his brother Seiji on stage; the other flew in from the mainland ...

Sandy Armstrong has taken one small step for teaching with her sixth-grade special ed students at Kailua Elementary School. So far this year they’ve read four books as a class and have regular book club discussions - just like grown-ups. “I was surprised at how they caught on to the idea of community reading,” says Sandy, who is striving to instill the habit. “This is one of the best things I’ve ever done with them.” The program must be working, because even when they have parties to celebrate each book - her students still talk characters and plot DURING THE PARTY! ... Andrew Dexter of Kaneohe and Patrick Nakagawa of Kailua made the fall semester dean’s list at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. I’ll bet they read a lot ... In nearby Boston, Northeastern University student Rod Griffith of Kaneohe earned a place on the NU dean’s list ...
