Del.icio.usKaneohe fisherman John Cazinha has joined the exclusive Century Donor club, having given up 100 pints of blood in his lifetime to the Blood Bank of Hawaii. (If it were gasoline, it would fill up my car’s tank!) It all started when his mom, the late Irene Cazinha, became ill, and John has been giving ever since. You can try to catch up with him by going to the next Windward Oahu drive on Sept. 5 in the Kailua Daiei parking lot (845-9966) ... Army National Guard Pvt. Jason Denis of Kailua has completed basic combat training at Fort Knox, Ky. ... The tall guy nosing around the papayas at the Aug. 11 Kailua Night Market was Mayor Mufi Hannemann getting into the spirit of National Farmers Market Week ... Eric Manke is getting into the spirit of the city’s “go online” campaign. The Kailua actor is in public service announcements with Jasmine Trias to promote the new services. And taking a semester off from UH-Manoa, Eric also has enrolled in the Walt Disney World College Program in Orlando this fall. Dad Jim Manke says locals visiting Florida’s Magic Kingdom this fall should recognize him. “Just look for the Pluto with a shaka sign!” ... Speaking of shakas, Spc. Vinnie Gonzales of Kaneohe reports that the sign is still alive and well among Hawaii National Guard troops in Iraq despite the recent ban at formal checkpoints. So is the Hawaiian flag and favorite local foods - all concocted in a makeshift kitchen where “people are always in there cooking up something. Even just last night,” Vinnie wrote in an e-mail last week, “guys were making Spam musubis. Man, they were good!” Some of those guys even chill their burger patties and gravy from dinner and bring it out in the morning to put over their eggs for Baghdad Loco Moco ... Kaelepulu Elementary student Blake Asing placed 3rd in the boys 50-meter dash (ages 9-10) at the Hershey Track and Field Games North American Finals this month in Pennsylvania. Blake and Mike Iervolino of Ahuimanu had all-expense-paid trips to the event to compete with youths from across the nation and Canada. Mike placed 11th in the boys standing long jump (ages 13-14) ... Reid Nishizuka (Kailua ‘00) has graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a degree and a commission as a second lieutenant from the school’s Air Force ROTC program ... Meanwhile, down in the country, cafeteria manager Nora Takeno (239-3106) is looking for volunteers to cook and serve dinner at Kahaluu Elementary School’s monthly movie nights ... Did you know that Larry Trela, King Intermediate School’s band director, was also a Cobra in his younger days? That’s a lot of time spent making music in one place ... Kaneohe business franchisee Peter Blodgett is offering a “find-it-andfix-it” sweepstakes through HouseMaster to area homeowners, and the prize is a free home inspection by Peter plus $10,000 to fix up what he finds that needs fixing. Artist Linda Oszajca of Kailua led her Jarrett Middle School students in a yearlong project to create black-lit art for the Hawaiian Origins Tunnel, part of the Bishop Museum’s soon-to-open Science Learning Center. Students from Hakipuu Learning Center are also involved in visualizing the kumulipo chant through art as visitors walk through the tunnel ... The Windward-based band, Honolulu Blue Devils, will play this Sunday at the grand opening of Wally Amos’ Chip and Cookie store at 609 Kailua Road. Festivities are from 1 to 3 p.m. The musicians - Dale Machado, Burl Burlingame, Mark Walker, Jim Barry, Gene Kois and Alison Aldcroft - recently played for the Perry & Price Show, where Dale usually works as the engineer. This time the Kaneohe guitarist got to make sounds at the John Dominis Restaurant gig instead of monitor them and fiddling with the controls ... Le Jardin Windward Oahu Academy student Mason Yoshida was recognized (for grades 2 to 5) in the Hawaii United Okinawa Association’s first essay contest on the theme of Uchinanchu heritage and pride. Mason wrote of the fun he had at Okinawan Children’s Day Camp - especially making and pounding on his very own taiko drum
