King Intermediate School P.E. teacher Jimmy Edwards will run in the Boston Marathon April 17, having qualified with a time of 2:57 at the Honolulu one in December. He’s been up at 4 a.m. running as much as 20 miles a week all over Kaneohe and “to Sea Life Park and back"to get in shape for legendary Heartbreak Hill at the historic, prestigious race. “I’m so ready and so excited,“says Jimmy, who has never been to Boston, despite growing up on the East Coast. It’s safe to say he’s a good role model for the Cobras these days, and the school community sent him off with some travel cash ...

Three out of Hawaii’s five Jefferson Award honorees for 2006 are from Windward Oahu. Are we surprised? No! They are Jack Sullivan of Kailua, the inspiration behind AYSO for youths all over the state and a key planner behind the Waipio soccer complex; Waimanalo’s Nickie Hines who has fed the homeless and other needy residents for more than two decades via her Kokua Food Basket and St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church; Kahaluu Methodist minister Bob Nakata who has been a dedicated advocate of the poor and under-served all his life, most recently working to help the homeless and wipe out the crystal meth scourge ... Romance blossoms at any age, and George Hogan and Fern Pietsch proved it by exchanging vows last month at Pohai Nani ... It’s just like those tempting Olive Garden TV commercials: In Hawaii, it’s “No pasta for you!”...
