Kailua resident Linda Paul, a longtime student of the seas and advocate for marine protections, was named 2006 Volunteer of the Year by the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation on June 13 in Washington, D.C. Described as a tireless leader on behalf of coral reefs, marine animals and birds, Linda’s passion was launched with her UH graduate research on spiny lobsters. She also helped initiate the nomination of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands as a World Heritage Site with sanctuary status - which President George Bush endorsed three days after her award. In Linda’s view, the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands are “too fragile” for many human visits. The policy, she says, “is to bring the place to the people instead of the people to the place” ...

Branden Tanaka (Kailua ‘94) has completed Air Force basic training at Lackland AFB, Texas. So did Kenya Herlandiz (Castle ‘05) ... Ruby Tuesday restaurants donate $75 in gift cards per week to families in need through the Lokahi Tree Project. Maybe that’s where they all went during graduation weekend in Kaneohe. The place had a one-hour waiting list at 10 p.m.

We didn’t win anything, but my daughter and I beat a huge centipede across the finish line ...
