Christ Church Uniting of Kailua is proud that one of its own, Connie Mitchell, has been appointed to head IHS, the homeless agency founded by Kailua’s late Rev. Claude Du Teil. Connie, who is already highly regarded as an RN, has also assisted with Christ Church’s role in the Family Promise project where a dozen Windward churches are quietly housing and helping homeless families. By the way, Kent Anderson still needs help at the Family Promise day center at St. Christopher’s (261-7478) ... Little Sikeli Naivalu of Laie collected a healthy $2,500 savings bond for winning the 2006 title in the Meadow Gold Healthy Baby of Oahu contest July 9 at Ala Moana Center.

The 2-year-old appeared with a toy fire-knife and wearing a traditional grass skirt. Fourth runner-up was Ryli Kalahiki of Kaneohe ($750) ... Plaid Plumerias. Kailua-raised Dr. Brad Pearson has taken his career a few steps further. He just completed his Emergency Medicine Residency at Darnall Army Medical Center in Fort Hood, Texas. Next step: six weeks of flight surgeon school before joining his Schofield Army helicopter unit in northern Iraq. Brad is also the proud father of Liam, giving local veterinarian Rod Pearson and wife Roslyn their first grandchild in May ... Kailua’s Ed, Tina and Mady Wary flew to the East Coast this summer to visit Nana, Ed’s 88-year-old mother in Pittsfield, Mass. She’s contributed much to the menu of her son’s Oahu restaurants (Auntie Pasto’s, Dixie Grill). There was golf, sightseeing in Canada and plenty of Italian food, just like back home in Hawaii ... Hospice Hawaii president Ken Zeri, a Kaneohe RN, is non-profit team chairman of Aloha United Way’s 2006 campaign. (Despite the title, I think profit is the goal here) ... My compliments to King Windward Nissan for having such a helpful employee. Car salesman Henry Reverio of Kahaluu was strolling down Luluku Road to move his car last Wednesday when he encountered me, the great Waha Nui, trying to change a flat tire on my Honda. He had the deed done in no time and cheerfully went on his way - after recommending a great new car package to me ...

The state hospital’s hula halau, directed by Halaki Anchetta, danced before two bronze markers in a solemn ceremony July 6 at Hawaiian Memorial Park. The annual event honors hundreds of patients who died between 1930 and 1960, cremated and never properly inurned or remembered. They are now at rest in four vaults on a sloping lawn at an edge of the cemetery ... Kailua Realtor Dan Doyle has his sailing cap on now and is deep into the TransPac race - as we speak - on his reliable, winning boat, Two Guys on the Edge.
