Flying back to Hawaii from Portland recently was an aloha experience at the Hawaiian airlines check-in, since they’ve introduced local folks who volunteer to steer you to the right line and e-ticket machines (they earn 250 travel miles per hour of service). Jim Sequeria - a Vancouver, Wash., pastor with Hawaii roots and family in Kailua - took care of everything. He can even recommend local eateries and is planning a college luau in Oregon ... Jack and Marlena Hufstetler have produced their first child, Eric Elijah, who will no doubt spend much time in Paliku Theatre. His parents were married on the stage last year, and Jack, as Paliku’s technical director, is preparing for the fall production of Oklahoma there ...
Unless in an echo chamber, a voice cannot be in two places at once, so Kaneohe soprano Megan Mount has to forego the Art Song recital of winners Saturday at Orvis Auditorium (7:30 p.m. 922-8821). Megan is already performing that night in Sweeney Todd for Army Community Theatre. Also in the cast at the Richardson Theatre play are Larry Whitson of Kaneohe and Kaneohe Marine wife Amber Leonard, whose husband is deployed to Iraq ... Marcy Henry Fink is scheduled to conduct courses in meditation soon in Aikahi (see calendar), and she seems well-qualified to help clear people’s minds so they can discover inner peace. Marcy lives in L.A., has two teenage sons, and is a stress-management consultant for Boeing ... Mark Towill will be the youngest crew member on Roy Disney‘s yacht next summer. The Kahaluu teen was selected - after rigorous tryouts in California - to help ply the billionaire’s Morning Light with 14 other diverse sailors for the 2007 Transpac race ... Craig Anderson of Kaneohe has completed Air Force basic training at Lackland AFB, Texas.
Paul Thorpe
So has Paul Thorpe (Koolau Baptist Academy ‘00, Pensacola Christian College ‘05) ... Congratulations to new Kahuku head football coach Reggie Torres Jr., who won the title of DOE Employee of the Year. The Board of Education calls him “a universally respected local hero” both with the athletes and in the classroom as an educational assistant ... Also honored at the Aug. 17 BOE meeting were Cory DeJesus, Castle Complex administrative services assistant; Daniel Dela Cruz, Olomana School custodian; and the whole Kaneohe Primary School Adjustment Project team ...
Colby Morgan
Colby Morgan is the new retail territory manager for Sub-Zero/Wolf, and you’ll see her in the Honolulu showroom a lot with their amazing kitchen equipment. The Kailua marketing professional has previous work in radio sales, and once handled all the promotions for Anheuser-Busch in Alaska ... Speaking of kitchens, Jean Watanabe Hee has come out with yet another tasty book: Hawaii’s Best Salads, Sides & Soups. The retired schoolteacher still spends much time in her Kaneohe kitchen to feed her clan. Jean dedicates this, her sixth published “best” book, to granddaughters Rachel and Kristen Hasegawa with the gentle reminder: “I hope you will enjoy more soups and salads with your meals” ... Speaking of books, while many novels pop on and off the bestseller list and then disappear, a college textbook by UH psychology professor David Watson of Kailua has sold more than 750,000 copies since 1972 and is in its ninth printing already. The title: Self-directed Behavior ... The wedding of Melveen Leed to Al Dacascos was a very Windward affair, with the official ceremony taking place Aug. 19 at Sylvia Waiwaiole‘s home on Keolu Drive, Pastor Kawika Kahiapo presiding. Best wishes to the happy couple
