When the Marines and Sailors landed at Kailua Elementary School Aug. 18, they charged straight for the parking lot and repainted it in one day. “We were happy to get it out of the way and help get it done,” Navy CPO Charles Torres told the Hawaii Marine. They also ate as they worked to speed things up. So with extra time on their hands, they added 11 new parking spaces ... Annette Kaohelaulii is enthused about the new Hawaii Wildlife Viewing Guide, which many conservation groups helped put together to give fans tips, maps and facts about viewing creatures on sea and land. Mel Sato has worked his way up to chief estimator for Heide & Cooke, the state’s second largest Native Hawaiian-owned company ... WCC’s biological science professor Inge White teamed up with chef Grant Sato of KCC to put orchids on the dinner plate at the Honolulu Orchid Society banquet last month. Peter Schaktman as its spiritual leader - just in time for Rosh Hashannah (Sept. 23). The Kailua man has been interim rabbi during the past year, and has served Jewish congregations on the mainland since he was ordained in 1989. Before becoming a rabbi, Peter spent two years living in an Israeli Arab village, serving as a community worker in Arab-Jewish relations. “We were inspired by his teachings,” says president George Apter, “which help us find meaning in our lives through the traditions of Judaism” ...
