When the Marines and Sailors landed at Kailua Elementary School Aug. 18, they charged straight for the parking lot and repainted it in one day. “We were happy to get it out of the way and help get it done,” Navy CPO Charles Torres told the Hawaii Marine. They also ate as they worked to speed things up. So with extra time on their hands, they added 11 new parking spaces ... Annette Kaohelaulii is enthused about the new Hawaii Wildlife Viewing Guide, which many conservation groups helped put together to give fans tips, maps and facts about viewing creatures on sea and land. As head of the Hawaii Ecotourism Association, the Kaneohe woman helped put it together, and Waimanalo artist Patrick Ching illustrated it.
Among the sites in the book: Hamakua Marsh, Makapuu Point and Hanauma Bay. It’s at Na Mea Hawaii at Ward Warehouse, among other bookstores ... Speaking of animals, an event as large as the Kaneohe Christmas Parade (coming up Dec. 2) needs to have a few rules, right? Here’s one of them, for equestrian units only: “Please have one of your ohana members pick up your poops when you leave, and especially pick up the poops on the parade route” ... Ron Bright spent Labor Day weekend at the Hale Koa Hotel celebrating his 73rd birthday with lots of Brights. Most of Ron’s time right now is spent directing rehearsals for Paliku Theatre’s Oklahoma!, where cast member Harmony Maghanoy also marked her birthday, and Tracy Yamamoto was serenaded before taking a 25th anniversary cruise with husband Greg. The Kailua man has been interim rabbi during the past year, and has served Jewish congregations on the mainland since he was ordained in 1989. Before becoming a rabbi, Peter spent two years living in an Israeli Arab village, serving as a community worker in Arab-Jewish relations. “We were inspired by his teachings,” says president George Apter, “which help us find meaning in our lives through the traditions of Judaism” ... Sept. 30 is the final day to enter the Windward Artists Guild show at Ho’omaluhia. Call 254-4239 ... If you go see the animated film Everyone’s Hero, please stay for the credits so you can hear my son-in-law Tyrone Wells sing Dream Like New York, a song that he and our daughter Erin Chang (aka Elina) wrote while on a romantic trip to the Big Apple.
Erin (Castle ‘96) also sings it on her debut CD, Elina. They’re currently on a six-month concert tour of small colleges on the East Coast, South and Midwest. Recent adventures from their Pennsylvania trip log relate a meeting with a pot-bellied pig named Mimi and eating authentic Philly cheesesteak sandwiches in Philadelphia. (The two incidents are not related) ... Key helpers at Community Helping Schools are Billie McGill, creator of the “Billie Fund” that pays for field trips, supplies, etc. for needy Windward keiki, and Laura Wilcox, processor of all donor letters and office organizer
