Del.icio.usThe Windward School District’s nominee for 2006 Hawaii State Teacher of the Year - also known as “TOY” - is Brett Kewish, a seventh-grade science teacher at Kahuku Intermediate School. The winner (out of seven districts) will be announced at the Oct. 19 state Board of Education meeting in Pearl City ... Winners of a different kind: Kailua visitors to Downtown Las Vegas slot machines Gary Nekota, $16,002; and Lei Medeiros, way behind at $16,000 ... Philip Robinson of Kailua has graduated from the Army’s ROTC leadership school at Fort Lewis, Washington. Philip attends Clemson University in South Carolina ... Kaneohe’s Ione Adams, who makes Santa Claus “materialize” each year, clothed in abundant, artfully arranged fabrics, has already held her first Santa doll show of the season already. Get with it, folks ... Kailua artist David Behlke presents his latest color drawings in Heaven and Earth, a one-man exhibit at Gallery on the Pali through Oct. 27.

Dr. Patricia Lange-Otsuka has been selected as an “item writer” for the national nursing license exam. The interim dean of nursing at HPU’s Windward campus attended a session in August in Chicago to develop items for the test, which all nurses must pass ... Waiahole dancer Vivien Lee will join four colleagues at 7 p.m. Oct. 19 as they share their experience as teaching artists at Third Thursday in Mark’s Garage downtown ... Kristy Kapuahelani Cambra of Kaneohe earned a place on the President’s honor roll this past summer at Washington State University ... Artist Ed Furuike, a former Windward resident, opened a new show last Sunday at Cedar Street Galleries in Honolulu (589-1580) ... Sarah Amos of Lanikai is now a production assistant for ABC’s News One channel, and she’s been writing a fashion beat for the staff. (Maybe they need help?) Anyhoo, they asked her to expand it into a full feature story, which is available online at ABC.com. Proud parents Wally and Christine are gently encouraging their friends to click on Sarah’s story and make it the best-read piece on the website. By all means do it - after you’ve clicked on mine, of course. And as Wally will tell you, reading is good for you ... In case you’re still shaking your heads over that huge old orchid plant of Ted and Stella Sumida‘s (front cover photo in our Sept. 20 issue), here’s more to chew on: During its blooming period, the stalks of the flowers can grow 4 inches in one day. The original Little Shop of Horrors, in a manner of speaking ... Speaking of musicals, lyrics can be mighty powerful to a performer, and Glen Corlin has proved it. He’s in Paliku’s Oklahoma! cast, and after hearing Tony Young rehearse I’m Going to Kansas City on a Friday, he did! Glen went to Kansas City, that is. And on a Friday, too (for business) ... Students of the Capoeira Besouro classes in Kailua and Waimanalo and other fans might want to take in the school’s second annual glittering ceremonies and tournament, Batizado, Friday though Sunday at UH-Manoa. Masters of the Brazilian martial art are expected, including Mestre Amen, who was featured in the films Only the Strong and Kick Boxer II.

The Kaneohe-based group also has additional music on the soundtrack of the updated Polynesian Power, a football film that was broadcast on PBS Hawaii last week and will be screened next at Sunset at the Ranch, also on Saturday at Kualoa ... Things are picking up for the 2006 Kaneohe Christmas Parade. They’ve picked a grand marshall, and it’s actually a whole crew: manager Valerie Okano and staff from Windward City McDonald’s - a source of much sustenance and help in past parades. Parade chairman Art Machado welcomes all help, money, bodies and donations (239-9003 or 845-4111). The committee meets next on Oct. 25
