Things are picking up for the 2006 Kaneohe Christmas Parade. They’ve selected a grand marshal - and it’s actually a whole crew of marshals: manager Valerie Okana and staff from Windward City McDonald’s, which has been a source of much sustenance and help during past holiday parades. Event chairman Art Machado welcomes all help, money, (live) bodies and donations (235-9003 or 845-4111). The committee meets next on Oct. 25 ... A longtime advocate for HIV-positive women, Kaneohe’s Jaimie Kahale is featured on the new DVD, HIV in Hawaii: Local People, Local Stories, produced by the state DOE and several nonprofits for use in the schools ... Longtime canoe racer Tay Perry has compiled a book of inspirational Hawaiian proverbs and quotes about the sport. It’s a little yellow hardback, Paddling, from Mutual Publishing. Tay lives in town now but remains a member of the Lanikai Canoe Club. In fact, he was its first president back in the day ...

There are faces and lives behind those women who perform mammograms, and you can hear their stories firsthand if you stop by the breast cancer awareness table at the Kailua Macy’s store Oct. 18 (see calendar). Castle Medical Center’s mammography technologist Jodi Maher, for example, can tell you how early detection helped her personally to survive breast cancer ... Proving once again how well-rounded the Red Raiders are, Kahuku is one of 10 Hawaii high schools selected to receive the 2005-2006 HMSA Kaimana Award for excellence in athletics, academics, sportsmanship and community service ... Day” - a move that delighted Kaneohe mom Linda Elento who firmly endorses the Signing Time! method of communication for young keiki who have difficulty talking ... Kailua actor/TV news reporter Keoki Kerr puts on his director hat again for the Society of Professional Journalists’ Gridiron show, Raw and Untreated, set for the Diamond Head Theatre stage Oct. 20-21 ... The Rev. Bob Nakata may not know all 75 years of his church’s history (they celebrate it Sunday) but he was there as a kid when they built the “new” Kahaluu United Methodist Church in 1953. “We helped put the pews together,” he recalls. “They were designed specifically for the short Okinawan stature, so they’re low.” The distinctive roof was also the first to use telephone poles in the framing ... Speaking of sturdy framing, Pomai Lopez injured her back during Oklahoma! rehearsals last month. A dancer and singer in the cast (she’s pictured on page 1), Pomai is hoping to be healed in time for her grandfather, entertainer Jesse Kalima, to watch her on opening night (Friday the 13th) at Paliku ... Speaking of creativity, Manu Boyd will take his award-winning Windward hula troupe, Halau o ke ‘A’ali’i Ku Makani, onto the Hawaii Theatre stage at 4 p.m. Oct. 22 for Aha Mele IX, also featuring Ho’okena, Robert Cazimero and Puanani Wilhelm (528-0506). Proceeds go into the halau’s 2007 Merrie Monarch fund ... Lanikai’s Tom Kraft and Kaneohe’s Scotty Fraser are at it again. Tom’s company, T.J.Kraft Ltd/NorPac Fisheries Export, is donating all the fish for a Maui Culinary Academy benefit Oct. 21 at the swank Fairmont Kea Lani Maui in Wailea. And as Tom’s culinary specialist, Scotty is bringing in renowned NYC chef Andrew Carmelinni, who wants to help out. Seafood, eager students, eager eaters, top chefs = “greens” for the academy. Nothing fishy about that
